Research Tree: Xenonauts has an extensive research tree with almost a hundred projects to unlock, each with its own unique description and painted artwork. You will grow to care about the brave men and women under your command as they slowly grow from green rookies into hardened veterans, but that only makes it more painful when their heroic tale is cruelly cut short by a burst of plasma fire. Persistent Soldiers: Soldiers in Xenonauts are persistent from mission to mission, improving their stats and gaining ranks with combat experience - but their deaths are always only a single bad move away. ![]() Deeply asymmetric combat keeps the battles interesting - after all, you're fighting intergalactic invaders with 1970's ballistic technology! You'll experience the chill of encountering a new alien for the first time and the joys of test-firing a new weapon for the first time. Missions range from capturing crashed UFOs or alien bases to defending cities (or even Xenonaut facilities) against alien attack. Ground Combat: Xenonauts delivers tense turn-based combat across realistic, varied and fully-destructible battlefields, against almost fifty different variants of enemy.Devoted fans should love this game, but we're also keen to introduce the joys of old-school grand strategy to a whole new generation of players who might not otherwise experience it! We aim to improve the graphics, add new content and streamline the interface whilst still retaining all of the key mechanics of the original games. Xenonauts is a spiritual successor to the classic X-Com strategy games from the 1990s. A detailed strategic layer allows you to co-ordinate the defence of the planet, using your interceptors to shoot down UFOs and researching captured artefacts to learn about your foes and unlock new combat equipment to use on your missions. If you're interested in finding out more about the project, or supporting us with a pre-order, please check out our website.Xenonauts is a strategy game in which you control a multi-national military organisation defending a Cold War-era Earth from alien invasion, using small squads of persistent soldiers to eliminate the extraterrestrials and recover their technology in turn-based ground combat. We're on the home stretch now, though – we hope to have the game feature-complete in about three months, and at that point we'll just be adding new art and polishing/balancing what we've already done. There's still some distance to go with the ground combat – we've got several more gameplay systems to add, a number of improvements to the graphics (redoing the GUI, cleaning up the tilesets), as well as a lot of balancing and bugfixing to do. So throwing explosives around inside the UFO is a no-no – you'll want to clear it manually. Just like the rest of the terrain in the game, it's fully destructible – if you blow it up, you don't get to take it home to base with you. And even if you could, you wouldn't want to - all the precious technology you're risking your soldiers' lives to recover in the first place is inside that UFO. ![]() However, this tactic won't be viable in the final game, for two reasons.įirst, a UFO is significantly tougher than a barn, and you can't just shoot holes in a UFO with a rocket launcher. ![]() I managed to finish off the aliens with more rocket fire (three rockets have caused the damage you see there), which makes me very glad I didn't lose my rocket-armed soldier earlier in the mission. The final assault didn't go particularly well, truth be told.
